St. Mary's Academy of San Nicolas (Formerly Saint Nicholas Academy) is a Catholic private school run and partially owned by the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM) the first pontifical Filipino Congregation for women in the Philippines which was founded in 1684 by a valiant Filipina, Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu Santo. The school has affiliation with the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Nicolas Parish. It is located in Tomas Abella St., Cebu City, Philippines. It offers Kindergarten, Grade School, and High School curricula for boys and girls. It is an affordable private school with advanced techniques for every grade and year level. It nourishes every marian to faith,service and excellence as it is the loving virtues of Venerable Ignacia Del Espiritu Santo.

In life, Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo chose to break away from the 17th century traditional role of the Filipino woman, dependent on her survival and significance on a husband or a family. In death, more than three centuries since then, she continues to inspire and move the women of the institution that she founded, which has remained authentically Filipino, spreading its good works all over the archipelago and to other parts of Asia and Africa. Today, Mother Ignacia’s foundation – the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary – counts almost 700 sisters involved in different ministries and spread all over the country and beyond Philippine shores. The memory of this brave woman remains cherished and loved by those whose lives had been touched by her.



Saint Mary’s Academy of San Nicolas was established in 1966. The school went under the leadership of different RVM sisters. It also went through some changes of administration, addition of classes, granted Government Recognition and reparation of the school corridors and stairways. It also updated technological equipment to enrich instruction. School facilities like the clinic and guidance office were not only relocated but was also renovated. The administration that time didn’t only provide for facilities but also in innovating the curriculum to respond to the needs of the changing times. In 2009, the RVM Pedagogy was initially implemented and in 2010, Unit Plans and learning plans were used. School year 2011- 2012 started a new leadership and organizational set up. During this school year, PAASCU preparation for the High School Department was undertaken for the scheduled re-survey visit. The High School Department was granted a five-year re-accreditation status.For school year 2013-2014, the institution is offering Integrated Basic Education and this school year, S. Ma. Remy M. Villaraiz, RVM is our school directress.

We, the community of St. Mary’s Academy of San Nicolas witness to the compassionate love of Jesus. Inspired by the Ignacian spirituality, we develop capabilities of individuals and nourish their growth towards becoming morally upright and communally responsible citizens for inner and social transformation.

  4. form Ignacian-Marian leaders who witness to faith, excellence and service in varied socio-cultural settings;
  5. assist in building up resources and capabilities to sustain the institution;
  6. support and strengthen the educational program for the poor.
